The iPhone X first became available as a pre-order on October 27th of this year and became available to order on November 3rd. About a month later Apple has started to sell the phone solely SIM-free.
If you visit Apples online store you will see the new option to purchase without a carrier appear just below the four major carriers, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. Buying an iPhone X SIM-free model gives the consumer the option to choose a carrier of choosing.
Apple explains the SIM-free version in this statement on their website:
SIM-free” means your iPhone doesn’t ship with a carrier SIM card. The SIM-free iPhone sold on apple.com and at the Apple Store is unlocked. That means you’re free to use a SIM card from any carrier that provides service for iPhone.
The SIM-free model is $999 for a 64GB model and $1,149 for a 256GB model. Both models will arrive by December 13th (as of Tuesday December 5th) according to Apples website.
